Many managers and supervisors are promoted to management positions based on their hard skills. Yet few of them have had training in the area of managing people. Especially managing difficult people. In conducting seminars on managing people, one challenge I hear managers and supervisors face nowadays is how to manage a difficult employee. You can’t control them, but you can control their environment in the hopes of coaching the employee to better performance.

Here are 10 Management Tips for Managing Difficult People:

1. Document, document, document. As far as the courts are concerned, if it isn’t written down it’s as if it didn’t happen. Even if you have a prospective employee sign a form saying they know they can be terminated at any time, without cause, and without warning or reason. You never want to terminate without proper documentation. Terminating an employee without cause, reason, or prior warning, can make it easier for the difficult person to win a wrongful termination lawsuit.

2. Document training and coaching. Any type of training you provide for your difficult employee is considered coaching. In managing difficult people, many managers assume the documentation is to build a case for termination. It is not! It’s really to show everything you did to try and salvage the difficult employee. This includes any and all training. Whether you trained the employee, someone else trained them, or you sent them to a seminar to be coached to better performance.

3. Avoid the word “attitude.” In managing difficult people, why would you want to avoid saying something like, “Pat, I don’t like your attitude?” Because it’s too subjective. It’s not specific enough.

4. Focus instead on specific behaviors or the quality of their work. For example, what should you do if every time you delegate a special project to the difficult person, they fold their arms, exhale loudly, roll their eyes, and sarcastically mutter under their breath, “Okay, whatever?!” You would want to say in a low controlled tone something like, “Pat, every time I delegate a special project to you, the arms are folded, you’re rolling your eyes, muttering under your breath, ‘Okay, whatever.’ What seems to be the cause of this?” Notice I listed specific behaviors. So focus on facts.

5. Be objective, not subjective. As mentioned, when managing difficult people, be objective by mentioning specific behaviors, or specific declines in the quality of their work. For example, when documenting the employee’s “attitude,” you might document the following: “Every time I delegated a special project to Pat so-and-so, he/she would fold their arms, exhale loudly, roll their eyes, and mutter under their breath, “Okay, whatever!” Now, if this were ever read by a jury, or your H. R. department if you have one, or your manager, they would have a clear picture of this person’s attitude.

6. Provide specific examples of the behavior or quality of work you want. Put it in writing for accountability. When managing difficult people, it’s imperative that as their manager or supervisor, you’re making their goals and objectives clear. For example, if they’re doing clerical work, they are to, “Correct and proofread all required reports for the quality control department.” Or if they’re in customer service, an example of a measurable, quantifiable, specific goal would be that they are to, “Respond to all customer complaints within 48 hours of receiving them.” If they’re in manufacturing, they are to, “Produce 35% more wingbats by December 15 of this year. “

7. Be aware of how you present yourself. When managing difficult people, remember, you are their role model. Be aware of your eye contact. Typically look at the person for two to five seconds. You don’t want to stare at them bug eyed! But you also don’t want to avoid looking at them because you’ll come across as too passive, too wishy-washy. They’ll sense you’re fear of confrontation.

Having lots of eye contact can be difficult for some people because in some cultures, children are brought up that it’s disrespectful to have eye contact with their elders. It can be difficult to unlearn these habits. Also, watch your tone of voice. Use a low controlled tone. Be aware of your body language, too. Study after study shows that fully 93% of what people notice and believe about you in face-to-face communication is based on your tone and body language.

8. Be very clear and concise in spelling out the consequences of what could happen if they don’t improve. For example, if this is a verbal warning, you might say to the employee, “You know our policy here, and right now this is a verbal warning. As it says in our handbook, if there isn’t sustainable and maintained improvement including and beyond the next thirty days, it could result in further disciplinary action. Or, it could even result in termination.” In managing difficult people, one of the golden rules is you don’t want the employee to ever be able to say that they “weren’t warned.” Or, “I didn’t know. You didn’t tell me that.”

9. Get at the root cause of what is causing the employee to be difficult. For example, do they simply not like their job? Would they rather be in a different department? Are there personal issues going on with the difficult person that you need to know about? While it’s not your business to know what they do outside of work, it is your business if it’s something that’s affecting their work performance.

You can simply say to the difficult person, “Is everything okay? Is there anything going on that I need to know about? Because this drop in performance just doesn’t seem like you. As your manager/supervisor I want to see you succeed. And I’ve noticed a real decline in the quality of your work, for example… ” Then, give very specific examples. Remember, be objective not subjective. Focus on facts. Attack the problem not the difficult person. Attack the behavior not the person.

In managing difficult people, a lot of this is common-sense. Yet, as mentioned earlier, most managers, supervisors and team leaders are promoted to leadership positions based on the fact that they were doing a great job. But that doesn’t mean they know how to manage difficult people.

10. In managing difficult people, have follow up performance-related meetings with the difficult employee. For two reasons: First, it’s what the courts want to see. Second, it does the employee a great disservice if they make a big turn-around and you don’t acknowledge it. Have a date and a time in writing for when you and the difficult person are going to meet again. And do meet! According to research one of the main reasons employee improvement plans fail is lack of follow-up on the part of the manager.

Anatomy and Physiology 1 is a difficult class that causes anxiety and frustration in most students. Almost every Doctor, Nurse or Marine Biologist has stumbled at some point when learning and physiology but the good news is that most find a way to pass and to move on in their studies. As a former student and current instructor of anatomy I have become familiar with some techniques and tips that will help the student to learn anatomy and physiology and to make passing the class a little less painful.

1: Breath better, learn more. Our brains need adequate amounts of oxygen in order to function. Most of us tend to breath faster, shorter breaths when in stressful situations, like studying and taking tests. Trying to concentrate without a good supply of oxygen is like to swim in a poll with only three feet of water! Inhaling deeply and holding it for a count of eight and exhaling for three to four repetitions increases the pressure in the lungs thereby forcing more oxygen into the bloodstream. Injecting this fresh supply of oxygen into the overworked mind can help to kick start the learning process and reduce the associated anxiety.

2: Create comfort patterns. Try to think of ways to reduce distractions when you study and during test taking. Most likely when you are going to take your exam the room will be well lit and quiet so this is the environment in which you should study. By duplicating, as much as possible, the test day conditions while you study you can prepare your brain to tap into the information easier when it comes time to take the exam. Study in the same clothes you will wear on the test day, chew the same gum, wear the same perfume. Make the exam a natural and comfortable part of your everyday routine and your brain will react favorably.

3: Verbalize everything you learn. When you study talk out loud. Become familiar with the pronunciation of the terms used in anatomy by saying and listening to the words. Find a study partner who will listen to you and who will also speak. This helps both of you to tap into yet another sense that can anchor your thoughts.

4: Listen to what your instructor stresses. Most instructors will stress or repeat the information they deem important. Highlight these concepts in your notes and book. Find questions that target what he or she is firmly conveying. There are only so many ways to ask a question and a limited amount of time in which to test so most instructors want to keep students focused on what to study and you must keep an ear open to this direction.

5: Find old questions. Take as many practice tests as you can find. These can be found in the back of textbooks, in the library and online. Familiarize yourself not only with the correct answer but try to understand why it was right and why the others were incorrect. You will start to see common themes and similar questions that may very well be asked to you. You are not trying to memorize the answers, you are looking for repeating concepts.

Of course, each family has its own ideas and methods of raising their children. But it is also interesting to learn, what education practices exist. Not so far ago I have found ten tips for raising children of character and want to share them with you. The tips are very interesting and simple, but we always forget them in our everyday life. So I suggest you to pay attention to a short summary of them.

  1. Don’t wait that your child will be like you. Or like you want. Education should help the child to become himself.
  2. Don’t treat the problems of your child with disdain: be assured, at his age the life seems to him not easier, than yours. And sometimes it seems even harder. Because the kid still doesn’t get used as you do.
  3. Don’t treat the child with indignity or dishonor.
  4. Don’t demand from the child a payment for everything that you are doing for him: you gave him the life, how can he thank you? Later he will give life to another: this is the irreversible law of gratitude.
  5. Don’t work off your bad temper on the child. Remember: as you sow, so shall you reap.
  6. Don’t torture yourself if you can not do something for your child, but you should torture yourself, if you can do something and don’t do because of your laziness, stirring life etc.
  7. Remember: it is made not enough for the child if it’s not made everything possible. It is the major law of education!
  8. Love your child no matter what: he can be ungifted, unlucky, inpatient. While communicating with your child, enjoy the time you spend together, because it is a holiday, that won’t last for a long time.
  9. Love someone else’s child. Treat him like your own child.
  10. You should discipline wisely. Principles of discipline should be clear and firm but not harsh.

In conclusion I would say, that not only we bring up our children, but also they bring us up instantly. If you want to make your child better, you should become better yourself. It is the basic postulate of education!

I really get sick of hearing people say, “No pain, no gain!” But the old adage is true when it comes to riding bikes to lose weight. By pushing your cycling distance or speed, you are sure to feel some pain in your leg muscles, your hands, wrists, and your derriere– even some pain in your throat and lungs as your body tries to accommodate your increased demand for oxygen.

GETTING YOUR BICYCLE READY…TO ROLL OFF THE WEIGHT

Your first concern will be outfitting your bicycle. If you need an excuse to purchase a new bike, this is an excellent opportunity! I went from a 3-speed bicycle for leisure riding, to a 24-speed bicycle for more committed exercising. Once I learned how the different gears worked, I was very thankful for the extra speeds. They make my ride faster and the hills a lot easier to handle.

We’ve found the guys at the bicycle shop to be very helpful, and concerned for our unique cycling needs. Rather than simply steering us toward the most expensive bicycle available (as I had expected), they asked how much riding we would be doing, whether we were trying for speed or leisure, and whether we would be riding on paved roads or dirt trails. When you honestly share your goals and level of experience, the sales clerks can match you with exactly what you need. They want you to be successful in your biking venture!

Some state laws require bicycle lights. But if you will be riding anytime from dusk to dawn, common sense demands that you have lights on your bicycle. These little accessories are battery-operated and last a long time. There are a variety of lights to choose from. My tail light has different blinking speeds, and is designed to make my bike visible to cars approaching from both the rear and the sides. Check for brightness before you buy one. Install the light where it makes the most sense.

We held off on buying a speedometer and odometer unit for our bikes, but once we got serious about losing weight and getting in shape, this feature became a “must have.” You simply cannot track your progress without knowing how far and how fast you’re riding.

If you already have a bicycle, take it to the bike shop for a safety inspection each season. They should check the gears, tires and brakes to make sure everything is working properly. They can adjust your seat to fit your height and adjust the handlebars to fit your reach, making your ride more comfortable. If you’re lucky, they might even clean and polish your bike!

If you want to save money in the long run, you can find books and videos that teach you how to care for your own bicycle. It’s always a great idea to know how to change your own flat tire and adjust a loose chain.

Another must have is a bicycle pump. Ask your bike dealer how many pounds of air pressure to put in your bicycle tires. Check the tires each time you get ready to ride! We guessed at the air pressure one summer day, and lived to regret it. We rode the bikes to the swimming pool, not realizing that one tire was too full. While we were cooling off in the water, the hot sun was rapidly expanding the air in the tires-one tire blew as it sat in the parking lot. The day in the sun was not so fun, once the pool closed and we had to wait for a truck to haul us home!

HEALTH TIP: Talk with your doctor first, and get his or her blessing before you increase your rate of physical activity!

STAYING COMFORTABLE ON YOUR BIKE

Sitting for long periods of time on a bicycle seat can cause pain, discomfort, and even serious blood circulation problems in avid bicyclists. At your local bike shop, you’ll find a variety of bicycle seats made specifically for your comfort and health. The salespeople at our local bike shop encouraged us to try out new seats on our bikes for a few days. My husband found the split seat to be more comfortable for himself, while I opted to keep my old gel seat. Someone has even invented seats that look more like a bird perch than a bicycle seat!

HEALTH TIP: Get off your bicycle seat and walk around every 25 minutes or so to get the blood flow to important unmentionable parts of your body.

Think about your clothing…you don’t have to have padded biker shorts and special clothing to start riding bikes. There are actually scientifically engineered fabrics designed to pull sweat away from your body in the summer and to keep you from getting hypothermia in the winter. But for now, just wear layers of comfortable sports clothes.

Make sure your clothes aren’t so tight that you are miserable trying to pedal. But they shouldn’t be loose enough to become entangled in the bicycle chain, either! If you become overheated, strip off a layer. If you get cold, add a layer. Wear light or bright colors to allow drivers to see you easily.

It really helps to have a small cargo rack on the back of your bike. Mine looks like a little shelf over the back tire. It has two bungee cords to keep any cargo securely fastened to the bike. I’ve used it to tote a small picnic cooler, a shopping bag or extra clothes.

I had the bike shop attach a water bottle holder to the bike under my seat. I can grab a quick swig as I ride or pour some water over my pulse points to cool off a bit. Take small sips of water when needed during your bike ride, rather than chugging huge gulps.

A helmet is almost a must. Life is filled with hazards-and biking has its share. Be smart. Wear a helmet. You can buy a cool rear-view mirror for your helmet. The mirror helps you see when it’s safe to turn and lets you observe traffic coming up from behind.

I recommend wearing sunglasses-both for the sun and for bugs! At certain times of the year, the air is thick with flying insects. Getting a tiny bug in your eye is a painful event. For contact wearers, carry a contact case and lens cleaner on bike rides for just that reason. Some day you’ll be glad you did!

HEALTH TIP: Shake your hands downward frequently to get the blood flowing and to prevent pain or numbness in your arms and hands.

Make notes in your records for special circumstances. Did it get dark outside so you were forced to cut your ride short? Did the road crews dump a layer of gravel on your normally paved road?

What was the weather like? Was it dangerously hot? Was it windy? The wind can be your friend or your enemy. When the wind is behind you, your ride is a breeze…but coming from any other direction, be prepared to huff and puff. Accept any length of time as a job well done and simply get the ride accomplished!

One of the fundamental documents utilized in the police promotional process is your professional resume, however, there is nothing fundamental about constructing an effective one. Your professional resume is significant in a number of ways. It serves as an illustration of who you are and what you have done, but more importantly, creates the first impression-good or bad-of your ability and readiness to promote to the higher ranks within your organization. If you were to think of your professional career as a movie, your resume would serve as the preview. Resumes require great attention to detail. They must be absolutely free of mistakes and the content must be crafted specifically for the position you are vying for. Naturally, the content of your resume is paramount, however, its aesthetic appeal is also highly important, in that the formatting, style, font, spacing, and use of varied print (bold, underlined, italics) achieves visual written symmetry.

While the art and technique of writing a resume can fill a book, her are a few insider tips to answer common resume questions.

  • Can a resume be longer than two pages? Of course, but only if there is a real need. Cut out fluff, repetition, and minutia and all the training courses that have no link to your new position. Be concise and summarize, covering the highlights, not the details. Less is more.
  • Candidates turn in their resumes printed on quality paper. The nice resume is copied and placed in the officer’s personnel file. The cheap Xerox copies are provided to the oral panel. To avoid this, turn in at least four copies on the quality paper so the panel gets the best version.
  • Stick with bright white, off-white (bone, eggshell, ivory, etc.), or light tan colored paper. Use 24-32 pound grade that is 100% cotton or linen finish paper.
  • Use underlined, bolded, and slightly increased font sizes to add punch to portions of your resume, but don’t overdue it. Include periods at the end of bulleted lists when they are written in sentence form. Think clean, concise, and simple. Don’t use clipart or gimmicky graphics. Concise bulleted lists are preferred over lengthy paragraphs.
  • For in-house promotions, there is no reason to include your home address, phone numbers, or email addresses unless directed to do so. This information is for entry-level personnel. The oral interview panel will not call or write to you and Human Resources already has this information.
  • For the purpose of clarity, ease of reading, and resume space, avoid unnecessary wordy phrases. Consider replacing “in order to” or “so as to” with “to.” Replace “due to the fact that” or “for the reason that” with “because.” Replace “by means of” or “through the use of” with “by” or “with.” Replace “at this time” or “at this point in time” with “now” or “currently.
  • Use a single concise sentence to illustrate what your primary objective is. “Promotion to Sergeant” or “To provide outstanding leadership as a Lieutenant for the Los Angeles Police Department” or similar variation will be sufficient. Avoid large cerebral words or descriptions that are obviously intended for show and not content: “To introduce my value-driven leadership persona to the ever-changing paradigms of the 21st-century law enforcement workplace.” Wordy and over-written sentences like this are not only ineffective, but will also be viewed negatively.

10 Tips to Improve Your Self Esteem

Striving to improve our self esteem is on everyone's mind. It does not matter if you actively pursue this goal or you subconsciously working on improving your self esteem. The problem with this is that you really do not know exactly what you want to improve. You're acting intuitively on external signals.

Do you know how to improve your self esteem? Probably not. To make it a little bit easier for you and to achieve your goals quicker I put together 10 tips that you can utilize right away.

1. Build up your self-esteem. You must take an inventory. What do you want to improve or change about the way you interact with others? Try to make only one change at a time. Always check you progress before making another change.

2. Celebrate your journey, not your destination. Learn to always feel good about where you are now, and to exude self-confidence about wherever you might find yourself tomorrow.

3. Set clear goals for yourself before every interaction. Know what you want. Think about how the people you will be meeting can help you reach those goals. Then decide how to approach each person accordingly. Apply this regularly and you will notice a difference.

4. Be proactive. Take the initiative. Be decisive. Let the other person know exactly how he or she can help you. Proactive people tent to be more successful in their career.

5. Treat each person you meet as if she or he is really important. (You'll be amazed how this works.)

6. Give a firm handshake; look the other person straight in the eye. Practice both of these. Your handshake should be just right. Not too firm and not too loose. Train yourself to notice something you like or find attractive in the person.

7. Listen! Listen! Listen! Teach yourself to develop good listening skills. Learn a way to remember the other person's name. If in doubt simply ask for the name again 2 or 3 sentences into the conversation.

8. Visibly respond to the other person. Smile, nod agreement, and address him or her by name. Apply all you listening skills to visibly respond. The body language is the most important part of a conversation. Practice, practice, practice …

9. Pay more attention to the other person than to yourself. Are you responding to what may be going on in his or her life? Do not filter out bad news. Put yourself in the other person's shoes. Be caring.

10. Stay "in the moment." Do not mentally cut off the other person. Do not reload while he or she is speaking. What this means is that you need to focus on the other person 100% during a conversation. Anything less is considered rude.

Next time you meet somebody new look out for these behaviors. Put a mental checkmark on the each of the 10 tips and see how well this person scored. Chances are that the person rated very high if you tent to like her / him. On the contraire the person probably scored low if you do not seem to connect.

The more you practice the more likely you will create a positive aura which is commonly known as charisma. To step up to become a charismatic personality it takes more than just these 10 tips.

Creating a positive aura will benefit you in every thing you do. You will create a warmer ambience with your family. You will be more successful in your career. Even while trying to meet a partner of the opposite sex you will notice a difference on how people perceive you.

How to Get Her Back – Tips for Healing A Broken Relationship

When your girlfriend decides she’s had enough and wants to move on to see other people, it can really hurt. I know it’s not exactly “manly” to let it be known that we feel pain like anyone else, but that doesn’t change the fact that we do. Well, there are plenty of ways to get over that pain and even get back together with your ex girlfriend, and I’m here to help you!

Getting back with your ex isn’t going to be a walk in the park, but there’s a system to it that can simplify things and make it way easier than it could be. Even then, there’s no guarantee that it works for everyone, and honestly anybody who says “my way is 100% flawless and guaranteed” is lying. No single method works 100% of the time with 100% of the people, but this process I’m about to show you is one of the most effective ones out there.

First things first, when the breakup actually happens, don’t go chasing after her begging her to come back to you. It’s not very manly, and it’s not going to get you anywhere anyways. She’s made up her mind, she’s probably angry or hurt or both, and seeing MORE of you right at this time isn’t really on her list of favorite things to do.

Give her some space, some time to heal and get herself back in order. While she’s sorting her own things out, you need to be doing some thinking yourself. Painful as it is, it’s been made clear that the two of you as you both are will NOT end up working things out. SHE’S not going to change, so if you want to make it work with her YOU’RE going to have to be the one to change.

Analyze your relationship with her, and really figure out what YOU did wrong. If you already know what it was, that’s great…some girls will tell you what the problems are when they break up with you. Not all of them do though, so you may have to do some thinking here. Once you figure it out and make a list of the things you did to contribute to the demise of the relationship, you have some more work ahead of you.

You have to take those flaws and errors you have or have made, and get rid of them. Stop doing the things that drive her away, and start doing things to draw her to you. A lot of this depends on the specific girl and what her individual needs and expectations are, so you can tell yourself exactly what it is you need to do better than I could, since you know her better than I do.

Whatever the case may be, you need to work your issues out and solve your biggest problems. When you’re either done with that or are well on the road to being done with it, you can reinitiate contact with your ex. Remember to keep it simple and light, calling about the breakup or getting back together isn’t usually met with much positivity. A pretty tried-and-true example of a first contact is to see how she’s been doing since the breakup. It’s light, shows you care, and doesn’t start getting into “oh my God I miss you so much come back.”

Once you’ve established contact again, slowly build back up with a few contacts here and there, light and friendly without getting TOO friendly. Eventually you two will probably start spending time together, and at this point it’s important to spend this time doing things the two of you always really enjoyed doing before when you were a couple. Doing something fun and familiar should bring fond memories to the surface, and start to rekindle a little of what she felt for you in the past.

Really, from here it’s just playing it by ear. Pay attention to her, listen to her, and watch for any signals that she may still be in love with you. Let her see for herself that the problems you had that assisted the ending of the relationship have been dealt with or are in the process of being dealt with. Be the guy she fell in love with, only without the faults that made her leave.

Following this procedure tends to have excellent results, guys. No other “technique” has as high a success rate, because this one actually fixes the problems. If she loves you, she WANTS to be with you, she just doesn’t want to be unhappy while she is. That’s why she left! If you make it so that you’re not causing her unhappiness and she can see that you won’t be, she’ll be far more open to giving it another shot.
